Literary Analysis
There are many characters in the novel, Among the Hidden, and each character have their own personalities. One character from the novel, Among the Hidden, is Luke. Luke is a very caring person. In the novel, Among the Hidden, it states, "What if she never came back? He should go, if only to protect Jen,"(Haddix pg. 115). This means that Luke cares about Jen, one of his friends. Another character in the novel, Among the Hidden, is Jen. Jen has a very rebellious personality. In the novel, Among the Hidden, it states, "What kind of sign do you want to carry? I deserve a life or End the Population Law now! or- this is one I found in an old book- Give me liberty or give me death?"(Haddix pg. 110). This means that Jen is going to make sign to rebel against the laws in their government in the book. Another character in the novel, Among the Hidden, is Luke's mother. Luke's mother is also a caring person just like Luke. In the novel, Among the Hidden, it states, "Mother felt his forehead. Are you sick?You're so pale- I worry about you, Luke, all day long. But then I remind myself, you're safe here at home, out of harm's way. She gave him a weary smile and ruffled his hair."(Haddix pg. 115). Another character in the novel is Luke's father. Luke's father is a farmer. In the story it states, "Downstairs he could hear Dad stomping around, muttering every now and then about the time and topsoil being lost with every raindrop."(Haddix pg. 116). The final main character in the novel, Among the Hidden, is Jen's father. Jen's father is a very businesslike person. In the story it states, "As if from a great distance, Luke heard Jen's father heave a sigh and blow his nose in a businesslike way."(Haddix pg. 130). Luke, Jen, Luke's father, Luke's mother, and Jen's father are some of the main characters in the novel, Among the Hidden. Each character in the story have their own personality.
The theme of the novel, Among the Hidden, is survival. In the novel all third children are made illegal. Each third child fight for their survival because the government will hunt them down and try to kill them. That is why the theme of the novel, Among the Hidden, is survival.
